Three rules I only learned after 16 years of trading

In the markets since 2007, ARTE since 2018, capital returned to investors in 2023. The three rules everything was rebuilt around: process, readability, team.

I started trading in 2007. Then came eleven years in banks and asset managers. Subprime as a junior FX trader. Greece in 2011. Brexit in 2016, when the market priced Remain and my book was positioned for Leave. I founded ARTE in 2018.

In 2023, the first fund I co-founded, a volatility arbitrage strategy, returned its capital to investors. I took six months to rethink everything. Three rules came out of it.

Rule 1. Process: rules before discretion

A process has to be built so that it cannot drift. The rules come first. Discretion comes after.

Rule 2. Readability: readable every morning

The Euro Stoxx is up: is the strategy up or down? If an investor cannot tell each morning, the strategy is not ready for investors.

Rule 3. Team: a team, not a stack of talent

Good people are not enough. They have to work together.

The result

Every strategy now starts in our family office, on our own capital. More than 25 run there today. How a few of them reach external investors is explained in How ARTE works.
